There’s a lot of conversation about the dangers of artificial intelligence — the loss of jobs, misinformation, or the erosion of human connection. While these are valid concerns, they don’t tell the whole story.
For people like me, who are external processors — those who think best by talking, writing, and creating through interaction — AI has been nothing short of revolutionary.
A Note Before We Begin
I want to preface this article by acknowledging that we all sit somewhere different on the spectrum between risk-averse and risk-taking.
As an experiential learner, I’ve learned that I tend to lean toward the risk-taking end. I’m curious by nature and open to exploring new experiences — and, more often than not, that openness is where the greatest growth opportunities live.
Thinking Out Loud with AI
Some of us process our ideas externally — we make sense of the world by articulating our thoughts, testing them in conversation, and refining them as we go. It’s a slow, sometimes messy, deeply human process.
For those who are internal processors, it can also be frustrating to witness. External processing can sound like decision-making when it’s really just thinking aloud. Meanwhile, internal processors tend to speak only once a decision has already been made.
It’s a fundamental difference in how we organise our thoughts — and understanding that distinction can transform how we communicate and collaborate.
For an external processor working alone, — as so many creators, entrepreneurs, and consultants do — there’s often no one to catch your half-formed thoughts or help you shape the rough marble of an idea into something beautiful.
That’s where AI becomes a gift.
It’s not replacing our thinking — it’s amplifying reflection. It listens without judgment, organises our chaos, and reflects our words back in ways that spark new clarity.
The Mirror Effect
When I engage with AI, it’s like holding up a mirror to my own mind.
- It captures my fragments of thought and reflects them back in a form I can examine.
- It keeps pace with my rapid ideation, helping me sort, prioritise, and expand.
- It transforms my solitary brainstorming into a conversation that leads somewhere.
The magic isn’t that AI “thinks” — it’s that it helps me think better. And it listens without interrupting, putting up barriers of why my idea won't work or taking me off on tangents.
Growth Through Reflection
In the Growth Zone Academy model, growth happens when we move through the cycle of Comfort → Challenge → Reflection → Growth.
AI, when used intentionally, fits beautifully into that reflective space. It helps external processors:
- Capture ideas before they drift away
- Challenge assumptions in real time
- Turn reflection into tangible action
It doesn’t replace human collaboration — it simply fills the quiet moments when we’re working solo and need a space to process, to test, and to grow.
The Human Element Still Matters
AI has no emotions, motivations, or moral compass. It’s a tool — one that can be used to create harm or to elevate human potential.
For me, the value lies in conscious, ethical use: seeing AI not as a threat, but as a thinking partner that helps external processors articulate wisdom, creativity, and purpose. And a way to seek critical feedback in a very responsive timeframe.
Final Thought
I believe AI can be one of the most empowering tools of our time for those who work independently and process ideas externally.
Used wisely, it turns solitude into collaboration, silence into dialogue, and ideas into impact.
Let’s challenge the narratives of harm and explore what is possible with AI — one thoughtful conversation at a time.
